Adult Women With ADD Face Daily Challenges
Adult women with ADHD face daily challenges. They often get misdiagnosed and neglected because many doctors think of ADD as a condition that affects only males and boys. Also, many ADD symptoms in women fluctuate in response to hormones, and are more evident during puberty, and then resurfacing when estrogen levels decrease during PMS or perimenopause.
Symptoms
Women with adult ADD tend to be impatient, easily irritated, and indecisive. They often get involved in projects without planning or taking time to think about them like careers or relationships. Many also have rejection sensitivity, which makes it difficult to handle real or perceived rejection. Women with ADD are more likely than those who do not have ADD to engage in risky behavior, such as early sexual contact or casual sex. They may also have multiple partners, unprotected pregnancy, or multiple partners. Depression is usually a co-existing illness or a result of ADD and should be treated. ADD symptoms are more obvious in girls who are puberty during PMS and as estrogen levels drop during perimenopause or menopause.
Diagnosis
Doctors might not be able to diagnose ADD in women because they are mistakenly thinking that it is more prevalent in males. Women who suffer from ADD tend to be more emotional, particularly when they are puberty, PMS and in perimenopause and menopause as hormone levels change. They can be extremely emotional and impulsive, and can be caught in the at a rapid pace, instead of planning their lives in a controlled manner. Depression is often a co-occurring disorder or is a consequence of the disorder.
